Nearly 200 U.S. Marines in North Carolina will be sent to Florida to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Florida.
According to a release from the United States Defense Department, about 200 Marines from New River, North Carolina, are heading to Florida to support ICE’s administrative and logistical operations.
The military stated in the release that it is part of a Department of Homeland Security request from May to mobilize up to 700 active military personnel, National Guard personnel and reservists.
The news comes as the first immigration detainees arrived at Florida’s immigration detention center in the Everglades, which has been labeled “Alligator Alcatraz” by President Donald Trump and other government officials.
According to the Defense Department, the Marines perform “strictly non-law enforcement duties” within ICE facilities, and they are prohibited from direct contact with people in ICE’s custody or “involvement in any aspect of the custody chain.”
