Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday responded to President Donald Trump’s threat to have him arrested.
During a rally on Tuesday, Mamdani said Trump is attacking him “less so because of who I am, because of where I come from, how I look or how I speak, and more so because he wants to distract from what I fight for. I fight for working people.”
“I fight for the very people that have been priced out of this city, and I fight for the same people he said he was fighting for. This is the same president who ran on a campaign of cheaper groceries, who ran on a campaign of easing a suffocating cost-of-living crisis,” Mamdani said.
Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign centered in part on grocery prices and cost-of-living. However, consumer prices have increased 2.4% in May compared to a year ago, according to a Labor Department report released in mid-June. The report also shows inflation has remained tame.
“And ultimately, it is easier for [Trump] to fan the flames of division than to acknowledge the ways in which he has betrayed those working-class Americans, not just in this city, but across this country,” Mamdani continued. “And in the ways he continues to betray them, because we know he would rather speak about me than about the legislation that he is shepherding through Washington, D.C.”
Mamdani was referring to allegations that the “Big, Beautiful Bill,” which is backed by Trump, will lead to a massive wealth transfer by cutting taxes for wealthy Americans while reducing spending on middle-class programs. The White House has disputed this, saying it is also the largest tax cut for middle-class earners.
Mamdani’s comments followed a Tuesday roundtable at the new “Alligator Alcatraz” detention facility in Florida. After Mamdani claimed he will resist ICE agents operating in New York City, Trump was asked by a reporter about his message to “communist Zohran Mamdani.”
“Then we’ll have to arrest him,” Trump said of Mamdani’s vow.
“Look, we don’t need a communist in this country … A lot of people saying he’s here illegally, we’re gonna look at everything,” he continued.
