More than 100 Texas lawmakers and pro-life advocates have signed a letter calling for Republican Gov. Greg Abbott to add an act that would protect the lives of mothers and babies from abortion drugs to the agenda for July’s special legislative session.
CatholicVote previously reported that, as of June 25, 98 leaders had requested that the July session deal with the Woman and Child Protection Act, which passed the Texas Senate but had stalled in the state House of Representatives earlier this year. According to a news release from National Right to Life, the letter received 32 more supporters as of June 30, bringing the total to 130.
CatholicVote reported that the act would allow Texans to sue anyone who trafficks, manufactures, or distributes abortion drugs; families to file wrongful death lawsuits if a pregnant woman dies from taking the drugs; and the state to prosecute abortion drug traffickers.
According to National Right to Life, the ability to order abortion drugs online results in roughly 19,000 abortion drugs being shipped to Texas every year. After July’s session, the next opportunity for the act to be passed is January 2027 when the lawmakers’ following session occurs. National Right to Life reported that in that time frame, an estimated 38,000 unborn babies could be killed by abortion pills.

CatholicVote reported that Abbott recently called for the special July session to deal with several unresolved legislative issues, creating an opportunity for the act to be revisited despite its struggles in the House.
Texas Right to Life President Dr. John Seago said in the National Right to Life release that Texas’ “culture of life” has seen progress, adding that they “cannot ignore the greatest threat to moms and babies in our state today — tens of thousands of abortion pills illegally trafficked into Texas.”
He continued, “We urge Governor Abbott to once again protect women and children from the violence of abortion.”
