The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is poised to remain situated in downtown Washington, D.C., but the Trump administration intends to move its headquarters to the Ronald Reagan Building.
The decision, which was announced on Tuesday by the General Services Administration, is just the most recent development in the nearly two-decades-long process of preparing for a new headquarters for the FBI, as Fox News reported.
As the outlet notes, the agency had been contemplating options for a new HQ for over ten years, including one in suburban Maryland.
Relocating to the Reagan Building “is the most cost-effective and resource-efficient way to carry out our mission,” according to a statement released Tuesday by FBI Director Kash Patel.
Patel explains
“This is a historic moment for the FBI. Through our strong partnerships with members of Congress and GSA, we are ushering FBI Headquarters into a new era and providing our agents of justice a safer place to work,” Patel said.
In his first term as president, Donald Trump intended to build a new headquarters for the FBI and tear down the old, dilapidated J. Edgar Hoover Building.
Before that, the Obama administration initiated plans to relocate the FBI to the suburbs of Virginia or Maryland.
Several government departments already call the Reagan Building home, including Customs and Border Protection, for one.
Before the Trump administration shuttered its operations and transferred its remaining responsibilities to the State Department, the United States Agency for International Development was also housed there.
Building’s fate uncertain
At this point, it’s not clear what the government plans to do with the J. Edgar Hoover Building after the employees move out.
In November 2023, the Biden administration crafted a plan to move the FBI to a campus in Greenbelt, Maryland.
Former FBI Director Christopher Wray and Virginia lawmakers had tried unsuccessfully to build new FBI offices in Springfield, Virginia, but flaws were found with that plan.
In February, the GSA’s inspector general’s office found problems with the way the Biden administration chose sites for new government buildings. However, they did not disagree with GSA’s choice to build the new FBI headquarters, a scenario now rendered moot by Patel’s decision.
