Anti-ICE protests brought traffic to a halt on Tuesday as demonstrators shut down the 6th Street Bridge in Downtown Los Angeles, disrupting a major artery in the city during broad daylight. The action comes in response to the Trump administration’s renewed deportation efforts, which have intensified in recent weeks.
Crowds estimated between 150 and 200 people gathered on the bridge around noon, many holding signs denouncing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.
Among the most visible symbols were banners representing the Los Angeles Tenants Union (LATU), a group that has become increasingly vocal in linking immigration enforcement with housing and labor insecurity.
LATU had previously issued a citywide “community strike” call, urging residents to cease work, avoid public transportation, and boycott business activity as a form of protest. Tuesday’s demonstration appears to be a continuation of that call, demanding a halt to federal enforcement and city cooperation with ICE.
One LATU spokesperson, who openly identified as an undocumented immigrant, blamed federal enforcement actions for economic hardship across vulnerable neighborhoods. “We know that many tenants will not be able to pay their rent come July 1,” they said.
“This militarization of our community has closed down businesses, taken away street vendors, separated families, and left people with barely enough to survive.”
The group’s rhetoric is unambiguous. “For the kidnapped, for the detained, for the children whose parents are missing, for those who cannot work and for those who cannot pay rent — the city must come to a stop!” LATU declared in a public statement.
City leadership remained silent on the disruption. Mayor Karen Bass’s office declined to comment on the protest, which temporarily paralyzed one of L.A.’s most iconic bridges.
This follows earlier calls from LATU for the mayor to impose an eviction moratorium, arguing that many undocumented residents now fear leaving their homes for work due to ongoing ICE activity.
