Illegal border crossings reached an all-time low in June thanks to what border czar Tom Homan labeled Tuesday as the “Trump Effect.”
Only 6,070 encounters were recorded at the U.S.-Mexico border last month, according to Homan, who oversees the Trump administration’s border control and deportation efforts. Homan credited the drop in border encounters to the deterrent effect of the administration’s strict immigration enforcement policies and harsh consequences for illegal entry.
“That is less than a single day under Biden. As a matter of fact, the total number of encounters is less than half of a single day under Biden,” Homan wrote on X, “President Trump has created the most secure border in the history of the nation and the data proves it. We have never seen numbers this low. Never.”
“The TRUMP EFFECT keeps America winning,” Homan added.
For comparison, the Biden administration averaged roughly 155,000 monthly border crossings, according to Customs and Border Protection. In May 2024 alone, around 62,000 migrants were released into the country, while Homan noted that none of the 6,070 encounters in June resulted in releases.
The Trump administration has stepped up its immigration enforcement activities, averaging over 1,600 daily arrests per day and taking legal action against cities and states that shield criminal migrants from apprehension. The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit on Monday against the city of Los Angeles, claiming the city’s sanctuary laws obstruct Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s mission and violate the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution.
Moreover, the Trump administration last week eliminated a 30-day notice period before imposing penalties of up to $998 per day on illegal immigrants who do not comply with removal orders. These fines were initially implemented during the first Trump administration but were revoked by the Biden administration, which described them as “unnecessary.”
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump traveled to the Florida Everglades to visit a new detention center dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.” The Department of Homeland Security said the facility will hold up to 5,000 of the “worst of the worst” criminal illegal immigrants, including those who have been convicted of committing homicide, traveling to meet a minor for sex, distributing child porn and forcibly raping a child.
