House Republicans have launched a formal investigation into allegations of a Pfizer vaccine delay in 2020, accusing executives at the pharmaceutical giant of slowing clinical testing to avoid impacting the outcome of that year’s U.S. presidential election. At the center of the inquiry is Dr. Philip Dormitzer, Pfizer’s former Chief Scientific Officer of RNA and viral vaccines, who has been subpoenaed by the House Judiciary Committee to testify on July 22.

Dormitzer allegedly told colleagues at his next employer, GSK, that three senior Pfizer officials decided to hold back testing data so results wouldn’t be released prior to Election Day. According to a letter from GSK to lawmakers, Dormitzer remarked, “Let’s just say it wasn’t a coincidence, the timing of the vaccine.”
The Pfizer vaccine delay is being treated as a potential attempt to influence the 2020 election outcome, which saw Joe Biden narrowly defeat President Trump. Pfizer’s results—reviewed by an independent panel—were announced five days after polls closed.
Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) criticized Dormitzer for failing to cooperate voluntarily, prompting a subpoena. “The Committee must resort to compulsory process to obtain your testimony,” Jordan wrote.
The Judiciary Committee has demanded all internal documents from Pfizer—emails, texts, meeting notes—pertaining to the alleged Pfizer vaccine delay and any communications with federal health agencies. CEO Dr. Albert Bourla has been asked to comply.
A Pfizer spokesperson strongly denied any wrongdoing, insisting the vaccine development was “driven by science and guided by the U.S. FDA.” Dormitzer, now no longer at GSK, has also denied delaying the vaccine and claims his statements were misinterpreted.
According to GSK’s internal communications, Dormitzer requested relocation to Canada in late 2024, allegedly expressing concern about a potential investigation under a new Trump administration. He reportedly told a GSK official that the release timing of the vaccine “wasn’t a coincidence.”
The House Judiciary Committee believes the alleged Pfizer vaccine delay may have deprived the public of critical health data during a national crisis. Lawmakers are pursuing documents and testimony to determine whether political motivations were at play in one of the most consequential public health decisions in recent history.
