What started as a normal shift at a Los Angeles 7-Eleven turned into a nightmare for Jessica McLaughlin — and now, her family is preparing to say goodbye.
Jessica, a beloved daughter, sister, and aunt, was allegedly attacked by one of her managers during her shift on June 24 at the convenience store on Melrose Avenue, just blocks from the iconic Paramount Pictures lot. The incident left her unconscious, and days later, doctors confirmed her brain had stopped functioning due to lack of oxygen.
Her brother, Sean McLaughlin, shared the devastating update on a GoFundMe page. “Jessica walked into work expecting a normal day — but instead, she was violently and senselessly attacked,” he wrote. “She held her down, sat on top of her, and didn’t let her breathe. When she finally got free, she collapsed. She wasn’t breathing.”
Sean says some coworkers tried to intervene but were attacked too. After the assault, the manager allegedly ran to the back room to delete surveillance footage before fleeing the scene on a bicycle.
Los Angeles police arrived at the scene to find Jessica unresponsive. Paramedics rushed her to the hospital, where doctors placed her on life support. But days later, her family was told there was no brain activity. They now plan to take her off life support and are preparing for her funeral.
“She was always there — for me, for our family, and honestly, for anyone who needed her,” Sean wrote in a heartbreaking tribute. “She had such a beautiful soul and deserved so much better than the way her life was taken from her.”
The suspect, who has not yet been named, has reportedly been fired from 7-Eleven, which released a statement saying it is cooperating with law enforcement. “Our hearts are with those impacted during this difficult time,” the company said.
No arrests have been made, but the investigation is ongoing.
Jessica is remembered as someone who made everyone feel safe, accepted, and loved — the kind of person who rooted for the underdog and saw the good in everyone. Her senseless death has left family, friends, and the community stunned and heartbroken.
