President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis held a press conference Tuesday at the newly opened “Alligator Alcatraz” immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades.
Joined by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, the leaders highlighted the facility’s role in supporting Trump’s immigration policies.
The Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport facility, capable of holding up to 5,000 detainees, was praised by DeSantis as a “force multiplier” for federal deportation efforts.
Trump confirmed federal approval for using Florida National Guard members as immigration judges to expedite deportations, calling the facility a potential model for other states.
“We have Louisiana doing it, Alabama’s doing it,” Trump noted, urging more states to follow suit.
DeSantis emphasized Florida’s commitment to Trump’s agenda, stating, “We’re doing what the voters have demanded for years.” The press conference drew protests from environmental groups concerned about the facility’s impact on the Everglades’ ecosystem.
The event underscored a strengthened partnership between Trump and DeSantis, with the president describing their relationship as “a 10, maybe 9.9.”
