In our previous report, we discussed how Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) has stated he will not run for re-election, so I wanted to cover that report a bit more than just a casual mention.
Tillis, overall, supported the spending legislation, but he did have some concerns. But after Trump threatened to primary him, Tillis announced he would not be running, then Trump took a victory lap.
Trump Threatens Primary Challenge
After Tillis announced that he could not get completely behind the bill, Trump went after him on Truth Social.
He posted that Tillis was making a “big mistake,” and he then added that he was “looking for someone who will properly represent the Great People of North Carolina.”
Tillis has been concerned about the Medicaid portion of the bill, as have other Republicans, so this is really something I wish Trump and leadership would have opened up a dialogue on.
Instead, the pressure campaign started, and rather than cave, Tillis voted “no” and said he would not run for office again.
I’m Done
Tillis was far from a lock for his seat, but we are generally better with an incumbent than bringing in a fresh face, especially during a cycle when we really need to concentrate on holding the House.
Tillis gave a speech that resembled much of what we have heard before, in that there is little bipartisanship in Congress these days, and now, even within the party, if you do not go along, you get pushed out.
He stated, “In Washington over the last few years, it’s become increasingly evident that leaders who are willing to embrace bipartisanship, compromise, and demonstrate independent thinking are becoming an endangered species.”
He later added, “It underscores the greatest form of hypocrisy in American politics. When people see independent thinking on the other side, they cheer. But when those very same people see independent thinking coming from their side, they scorn, ostracize, and even censure them.”
Trump Takes a Victory Lap
As word traveled about Tillis stepping down, Trump took a victory lap on Sunday night, calling it “Great news” that Tillis would not run.
According to previous posts, Trump has several people already lined up, possibly including his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, as rumors have been flying about her entering the political arena again.
Trump had posted, “Numerous people have come forward wanting to run in the Primary against ‘Senator Thom’ Tillis. I will be meeting with them over the coming weeks, looking for someone who will properly represent the Great People of North Carolina and, so importantly, the United States of America.”
I want to be clear… it is not that I am a fan of Tillis, I just don’t like the fact we are ostracizing conservatives that don’t completely buy into whatever Trump wants when we just don’t have the votes to spare in elections. We are quickly becoming our own worst enemy. This may work for Trump now, but what happens after he is gone? Nobody really seems to be thinking that far ahead.
