A quiet town in Ohio was rocked this week after a deadly machete attack claimed the life of a woman riding on the back of a motorcycle — all reportedly triggered by a misunderstanding involving a jealous ex and a case of mistaken identity.
Kenneth Wayne Brabant, 59, has been charged with murder, assault, and tampering with evidence after allegedly hurling a machete at a passing motorcycle, striking and killing 41-year-old Leigha Huff. The shocking incident unfolded Sunday night in Camden, a small town of just 2,000 residents located about 40 miles north of Cincinnati.
According to authorities, a woman had called the Preble County Sheriff’s Office around the time of the incident to complain that her ex-boyfriend was allegedly riding a motorcycle up and down her street trying to provoke her. She claimed her father, Brabant, was also outside at the time.
Moments later, Huff and a man — who did not know Brabant or his daughter — happened to ride down the same road. Brabant allegedly mistook them for the ex-boyfriend and launched a machete at the motorcycle, hitting Huff in the leg.
“The guy was coming after us with that thing… she was like, ‘oh my god,’ and then I sped up because I knew he had something,” the man driving the motorcycle told police. “And she goes, ‘oh my god, I’m hit, I’m hit.’”
The rider rushed Huff to a nearby friend’s home to call for help, but it was too late. Huff bled out before emergency crews could arrive.
As of Thursday, police said they could not confirm whether there ever was another motorcycle or if the ex-boyfriend was even in the area at all. “Someone made a decision to go to the end of the driveway and confront whomever they thought that was, and it ended tragically for our victim,” Preble County Sheriff Mike Simpson said.
Investigators later learned that Brabant had initially hidden the machete after the attack before eventually telling police where to find it — leading to the additional tampering charge.
During a court appearance Wednesday, Brabant simply said, “All I can say is I’m sorry,” before the judge quickly warned him not to discuss the facts of the case.
Brabant remains in custody at the Preble County Jail.
