A Tennessee man is behind bars after allegedly launching a brutal attack with a toilet plunger, dousing his victim in bleach, and fleeing the scene with a kidnapped 3-year-old child.
According to police reports, 19-year-old Charles Coffman has been charged with aggravated kidnapping, attempted second-degree murder, and tampering with evidence after a violent incident in Sevierville.
Authorities say the ordeal began when Coffman was reportedly asked by the child’s mother to pick up her son from a residence using an Uber. But things quickly spiraled into chaos. Once inside the home, Coffman allegedly got into a fight with the child’s father. He reportedly slammed the man to the ground, punched him repeatedly in the face, beat him with a toilet plunger, and even forced the plunger into his mouth.
Police say Coffman didn’t stop there. He allegedly dragged the man into a bathroom, stripped him naked, and poured bleach onto his injuries.
Officers discovered the gruesome scene around 4 a.m. during a welfare check. The victim was found naked and unconscious in the bathroom with severe head trauma, including a subdural hematoma. Meanwhile, the man’s 3-year-old child and a Ford Expedition were both missing.
Investigators later spoke with the child’s mother, who denied ever authorizing Coffman to pick up her son or even knowing him. A short time later, police located the missing SUV with Coffman, the child, and an unidentified woman inside. The child was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Coffman is currently being held in Knox County Jail. No bond has been set.
