A new Pew Research Center report offers insight into the voter demographics behind President Donald Trump’s sizable 2024 election victory. The data reveals significant changes in the makeup of Trump’s support compared to previous elections.
The analysis shows that Trump’s 2024 electorate was more racially and ethnically diverse than in 2016 or 2020. Hispanic voters, in particular, were nearly evenly split between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
In 2020, Joe Biden won the Hispanic vote by a large margin, 61% to 36%. But in 2024, Harris’s margin over Trump shrank to just three points, 51% to 48%.
Among Black voters, Trump made noticeable gains as well. He secured 15% of the Black vote in 2024, nearly doubling his share from 8% in 2020.
Trump also increased his support among Asian voters. Biden previously dominated this group 70% to 30%, but in 2024, Harris received 57%, while Trump rose to 40%.
Naturalized citizens, who make up roughly 9% of the voting population, also showed a shift. While Biden won this group 59% to 38% in 2020, Harris’s lead over Trump narrowed significantly in 2024 to 51% versus 47%.
Among non-college-educated voters, Trump doubled his margin compared to 2016. Rural voters showed strong support for Trump, with a 40-point advantage over Harris.
Religious voters who attend services regularly favored Trump by a large margin of 64% to 34%, per the Conservative Brief.
Male voters, who were nearly evenly split in 2020, shifted decisively toward Trump in 2024. He won men 55% to 43%, gaining especially with younger men under 50.
The report suggests Democrats are losing their hold on key demographic groups they traditionally claim as their base.
It also challenges the common belief that higher voter turnout benefits Democrats. Pew found that if every eligible American had voted in 2024, the popular vote margin would likely have remained similar.
This data offers optimism for Republicans but also presents caution.
Trump’s unique appeal, which crosses traditional party lines, is a major factor in the GOP’s recent success. His unconventional style and willingness to defy political norms resonate with many voters.
However, some analysts warn that Republicans must capitalize on this momentum, as past experience shows the party often struggles to maintain gains when in power.
The GOP faces challenges in Congress, where divisions and missteps could squander the advantages Trump has helped secure.
To maintain and grow their support, Republicans must demonstrate they offer a better vision than Democrats. This includes recognizing and respecting voters as individuals, not just demographic groups.
Building trust with new voters and delivering on promises will be crucial for the party’s future success.
