An Arkansas mother has been sentenced to 120 days behind bars after allegedly admitting she gave marijuana and THC products to her children — some as young as six years old.
Deanna Sue Woods, 36, was arrested in January after a Department of Human Services worker interviewed her 6-year-old daughter, who revealed that her mom had allowed her and her siblings to ingest marijuana and THC edibles, according to a police affidavit obtained.
After a drug test confirmed the presence of THC in the child’s system, DHS alerted the Brookland Police Department. Woods was arrested the following day.
During questioning, Woods reportedly admitted to giving THC-infused honey and chocolate to her children, ages 6, 10, and 15. She also allegedly allowed the 6- and 10-year-old to use her vape pen. In a written statement to police, Woods claimed she did this to discourage her kids from experimenting with marijuana on their own.
Authorities say Woods also confessed to smoking marijuana around her 1-year-old and using the drug while breastfeeding.
She was charged with 12 counts each of endangering the welfare of a minor and introducing a controlled substance into the body of another person. Woods spent 60 days in jail before posting bail and was sentenced to serve an additional 60 days after agreeing to plead guilty to one count of each charge during a June 25 hearing.
Along with jail time, Woods must complete parenting and substance abuse classes. She is also barred from contacting her children unless approved by their legal guardian and the Department of Human Services.
