June 28 2025 BRONX, New York – A fire that broke out Friday night at a Bronx apartment building left one man dead and injured at least ten others, including seven civilians and four firefighters, according to FDNY and NYPD reports.
The fire began around 9:30 p.m. on the first floor of a five-story building located at 65 Jesup Place, between Jesup Avenue and Shakespeare Avenue in the Mount Eden neighborhood. Firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions, debris, and damage including charred walls and shattered windows. The blaze was placed under control shortly after 11 p.m., the FDNY confirmed.
The New York Police Department identified the deceased as an 85-year-old man who died from injuries sustained in the fire.
Obstructed hydrant access was reported at the scene, with FDNY units observing parked vehicles blocking a nearby fire hydrant. While this did not delay firefighting efforts, the FDNY issued a reminder that blocking a fire hydrant is illegal and violators may be subject to towing and criminal summonses.
Dozens of residents were displaced and gathered outside the building awaiting word on when it would be safe to return. One resident who lived next door to where the fire began said he and his roommates lost everything. He told reporters that the Red Cross is assisting them with temporary housing at a hotel.
