King Charles will host President Donald Trump at Windsor Castle for a formal state visit in September.
This will be Trump’s second state visit to the U.K.
The monarch, 76, extended the invitation to Trump and First Lady Melania Trump earlier this year following Trump’s re-election.
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer personally delivered the invitation letter to Trump.
Although the initial plan was for a later visit, Starmer accelerated the schedule. Reports indicate that the original invitation suggested either Balmoral Castle or Dumfries House in Scotland as potential venues.
Officials reviewed the options and decided Windsor Castle would be more suitable for a formal event. Palace aides confirmed that plans have now been finalized, and preparations are underway for the event.
A formal hand-signed invitation, called the Manu Regia, was delivered to Trump at the White House last week. Palace sources said the King has known Trump for years and is looking forward to the visit.
While the exact dates are not finalized, September is the likely timeframe. Trump accepted the invitation during a February meeting with Starmer in the Oval Office.
Starmer described the invitation as unprecedented and praised the 2019 state visit as a major success. He emphasized the strong relationship between the two nations.
Trump responded with enthusiasm, accepting the offer on behalf of himself and the First Lady. He expressed admiration for King Charles and for the United Kingdom, per the Conservative Brief.
Trump also stated that it would be an honor to attend and to pay respect to the King and the country. He added that the United Kingdom remains a valued ally.
Despite the positive tone, tensions between the U.S. and Canada continue to pose diplomatic challenges. Trump’s past comment about Canada becoming the 51st state drew attention.
In response, King Charles visited Canada in May and delivered a speech affirming the country’s independence, stating it remains “strong and free.”
The King’s speech marked the first time since 1857 that a reigning monarch opened a new session of Canada’s Parliament. The visit was funded by Canadian taxpayers.
Since Trump’s January inauguration, discussions have begun about a possible official visit by senior members of the British royal family to the United States in 2026.
Trump has voiced support for the royal family on multiple occasions, saying in March that he “loves King Charles.”
During Trump’s first state visit in 2019, Queen Elizabeth II hosted him at Buckingham Palace. That visit made Trump only the third U.S. president to receive a British state invitation during her reign.
No elected leader has ever been invited to the UK for two state visits. Only two other foreign heads of state, both monarchs, have received that honor twice.
On Friday, Trump announced a halt to all trade talks with Canada. The move followed Canada’s imposition of a new digital services tax targeting U.S. technology companies.
Trump criticized the tax as a direct attack and cited long-standing trade issues, including high tariffs on American dairy exports. He made the announcement via Truth Social.
