A Violent Mob Attacks Portland ICE Facility
A protest outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday night descended into a violent riot, as a mob of approximately 250 activists launched a sustained attack on federal officers. The rioters, protesting the Trump administration’s deportation policies, deployed commercial-grade fireworks and high-powered lasers against the officers in an attempt to breach the building.
The situation escalated dramatically when one rioter threw a large knife at the federal agents, and others attempted to set them on fire with Roman candles. The violent confrontation is the latest in a series of attacks on federal law enforcement in the city.
A Surge in Violence Against Federal Officers
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has condemned the riot as part of a dangerous and growing trend of violence against its personnel. According to DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, ICE officers are facing a stunning 413% increase in assaults.
“Our officers are facing a 413 percent increase in assaults against them as they put their lives on the line to arrest murderers, rapists, and gang members,” McLaughlin said in a statement reported by Newsweek. “Last night, Portland rioters violently targeted federal law enforcement… We won’t sit idly by and watch these cowards.”
Law Enforcement Responds
Federal officers responded to the assault by using flash-bang grenades and other crowd-control munitions to disperse the violent mob and secure the facility. At least two individuals, identified as Eduardo Diaz and Mariana M. Rivera-Loza, were arrested and are facing federal charges for assaulting a federal officer.
The strong response reflects the administration’s zero-tolerance policy for such attacks. As reported by Fox News, a DHS spokesperson affirmed the department’s resolve, stating, “Secretary Kristi Noem’s message to the rioters is clear: You will not stop us or slow us down.” The statement continued, “ICE and our federal law enforcement partners will continue to enforce the law. And if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will be fully prosecuted by the law.” The attack highlights the intense and often violent opposition federal law enforcement agencies face while carrying out their duties.
