DALLAS, TX – A bounty hunter and a licensed private investigator are facing murder charges following a fatal shooting in Dallas. Rodney Brown, 34, and George Davis, 23, stand accused of killing Dru Knowles, 33, in a confrontation that took place near an apartment complex in Old East Dallas on Thursday morning.
According to court documents, the incident unfolded as Brown and Davis attempted to apprehend Knowles, who was wanted on two felony warrants. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Knowles had active warrants for theft and credit card abuse.
The two men, whose armed security officer licenses had expired last month, initially went to Knowles’s listed address but did not find him there. Utilizing automated license plate readers, they tracked his vehicle to a location near Live Oak Street and Cantagrel Avenue.
Authorities say that Brown and Davis, operating from separate vehicles, boxed in Knowles’s BMW. Surveillance footage reviewed by police indicates that as Knowles attempted to flee, the two men opened fire. The affidavit notes that neither Brown nor Davis appeared to be in immediate danger, as they shot into the moving vehicle.
Knowles was struck at least four times and subsequently crashed into a power pole. Cell phone footage captured by a bystander shows the aftermath, with the two bounty hunters appearing visibly distressed.
Further complicating the situation, Davis was not wearing any clothing identifying him as a bounty hunter, while Brown wore a vest labeled “Warrant Services.” Both men were taken into custody and charged with murder after being interviewed by Dallas Police.
Efforts to reach the private security company employing the bounty hunters, Code Three Investigation and Security, were unsuccessful. Calls and emails to the North Texas-based firm went unanswered.
The family of Dru Knowles, who moved to Dallas from Arkansas in 2019, is mourning his loss, sharing photos and memories of him as they seek justice.
