BROOKLYN, NY – A mother’s grief echoed through the streets of Prospect Heights as Norma Campbell mourned her daughter, 36-year-old Tamika Powell. Powell was a devoted mother of two, ages 13 and 12, and her unexpected death has left her family and community in shock.
Campbell, speaking through tears, described her daughter as imperfect but undeserving of such a tragic fate. “She had a big heart,” Campbell said, recalling how Powell lived life on her own terms.
The incident unfolded late Wednesday night during a barbecue near Colton Avenue and Atlantic. Witnesses reported that Powell had an argument with a man before leaving the gathering. The man, donning a mask, allegedly followed Powell for a block, continuing the confrontation.
As Powell turned her back to walk away near a high-rise building, a gunshot rang out, striking her in the back of the head. The sound of the shot interrupted the music and chatter at the barbecue, leaving attendees in a state of disbelief.
Residents of the area, known for its luxury high-rises and community transformation, expressed shock at the violence. “You think you’re safe in a neighborhood like this,” one resident remarked, “but events like this remind us that violence knows no boundaries.”
Authorities have made progress in the investigation. The murder weapon was recovered at the scene, and surveillance footage has provided a clear image of the suspect. Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
