A 17-year-old boy in Wisconsin is facing murder charges after police say he brutally beat his uncle—who was also his roommate—during a heated argument over a sleepover. The victim, who initially survived the attack, later died from his injuries, prompting authorities to upgrade the charges.
Ronnie Fuentez was originally hit with a battery charge, but that was escalated to homicide after the man succumbed to internal brain injuries he sustained during the February assault.
According to a criminal complaint, officers were called to Waukesha Memorial Hospital on February 5 to speak with the victim, who had been hospitalized with severe head trauma. Though conscious and able to speak, he struggled to communicate due to internal bleeding in his brain. He identified Fuentez as the attacker, telling police that the fight erupted on February 1 at their shared home after he told his nephew that a friend couldn’t spend the night.
When Fuentez was told to ask his friend to leave, he allegedly became enraged, shouting and then striking his uncle repeatedly in the head with a closed fist. The victim claimed he attempted to defend himself, but Fuentez continued the assault, yelling slurs and refusing to stop even after his uncle tried to shield himself with his arms.
After the beating, Fuentez left the home and didn’t return until the next day. During that time, the victim reportedly chose not to go to the hospital, instead trying to manage the pain on his own. He told police that on February 3, he developed a migraine, which he treated with over-the-counter meds. But by February 5, his condition had worsened significantly.
While speaking with his mother on the phone that morning, he suddenly began having trouble forming complete sentences. His mother rushed over and drove him to the hospital, where he was placed in intensive care and diagnosed with a brain bleed. He later died in late May.
Adding to the case, police say Fuentez was already out on bond from an unrelated crime committed in September and now also faces a charge of misdemeanor bail jumping for violating those release terms.
Fuentez is scheduled to appear in Waukesha County court on Saturday. If convicted of murder, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars.
