Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) is facing criticism after tweeting about Iris Dayana Monterroso-Lemus, a Guatemalan woman who delivered a stillborn baby while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody and was later deported.
Jayapal wrote on X, “A pregnant woman lost her baby after ICE refused to give her prenatal care,” calling the situation “very sad” and “tragic.”
She also shared an article detailing Monterroso-Lemus’s experience.
Jayapal, a vocal advocate for abortion rights who has publicly shared her own experience with abortion, came under fire from critics accusing her of hypocrisy.
Some pointed to her past statements calling abortion “health care” and a “human right” as contradictory to her expression of grief over a lost pregnancy.
The website Not the Bee responded, “If true, this is very sad. Tragic even. And the fact that it’s sad is clear evidence that your position on abortion is both inhumane and barbaric.”
Christian influencer Kangmin Lee also weighed in, writing, “Interesting that it’s a baby when you want to dunk on ICE, but it’s just a clump of cells when you want to kill it.”
Other users echoed similar sentiments.
LifeNews.com commented, “Baby. Thanks for admitting it.”
One user asked, “She lost a baby or a clump of cells?” while another remarked, “Oh, so NOW it’s a baby, not a clump of cells, to be discarded as an inconvenience.”
Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), directly challenged Jayapal’s claims.
She wrote on X, “Absolutely FALSE. She had FULL medical, prenatal care. We have documentation to show it.”
McLaughlin added that Monterroso-Lemus, 37, is a Guatemalan citizen with a criminal history, including multiple arrests for child abuse and an active homicide warrant in her home country.
According to The Nashville Banner, Monterroso-Lemus, who entered the U.S. illegally in 2018, alleged that she was forced to sleep on the floor at a detention facility in Alabama, was fed cockroach-infested food and was denied proper medical care despite expressing concern for her unborn child.
She claimed she received no medical attention for three days after her baby died in her womb and that she was shackled to a bed and denied privacy during the stillbirth.
The delivery took place on April 29 at Ochsner LSU Health–Monroe Medical Center in Louisiana. She was deported on May 9.
In a press release, DHS disputed many of her claims, stating that Monterroso-Lemus received comprehensive prenatal care, including fetal Doppler ultrasounds, OB-GYN visits, dental care, hospital services and prescribed medications.
DHS also noted she was provided with a bed and meals approved by a dietician.
The department further stated she was given immediate medical care when she reported distress on April 29 and that no grievances were filed regarding guard behavior.
They also confirmed her criminal history, including two arrests by the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office on child abuse and neglect charges and the current homicide warrant in Guatemala.
Monterroso-Lemus is the mother of six children.
In a follow-up interview with Blaze News, McLaughlin reiterated, “This reporting is absolutely FALSE. Iris Dayana Monterroso-Lemus had FULL medical, prenatal care. We have documentation to show it.”
Jayapal has reaffirmed her commitment to reproductive rights and the humane treatment of all detainees, regardless of legal status.
She wrote, “Every person in custody deserves basic medical care and dignity.”
The situation has reignited debate around conditions in U.S. immigration detention centers and the broader treatment of illegal immigrants.
