Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that Hungary has successfully halted Ukraine’s European Union accession process, citing the support of over two million Hungarians through the ‘Voks 2025’ consultation. Speaking on Kossuth Radio from Brussels, Orbán emphasized that Hungary refused to endorse the opening of formal accession talks with Ukraine despite intense pressure from EU leaders.
He criticized the European Commission for trying to sideline Hungary’s position. ‘The EU wants to admit Ukraine not sometime in the distant future, but now,’ Orbán said, warning that since Ukraine is at war, its membership would effectively ‘bring the war into the EU’, and by extension, into Hungarian territory.

According to Orbán, it is impossible to integrate a country currently involved in active conflict and with unclear territorial and legal status. He argued that, historically, countries from the former Soviet bloc were first admitted into NATO to ensure military stability before joining the EU—something not feasible for Ukraine at this point.
He also accused Brussels of ‘deceiving’ Ukraine with unrealistic expectations, while Hungary, in contrast, speaks honestly about the limits of EU support. Orbán claimed that at the recent NATO summit, things were clearer: ‘The Americans told everyone to forget about Ukraine’s membership,’ effectively aligning NATO’s stance with Hungary’s.

Orbán accused the EU of behaving increasingly like Moscow in its approach, alleging that EU leaders such as Manfred Weber and Ursula von der Leyen were trying to influence Hungarian politics through opposition parties like Tisza and the Democratic Coalition (DK). He said Brussels aims to install a Hungarian government that consistently votes in favour of EU leadership directives.
On energy policy, Orbán voiced strong opposition to proposed EU regulations that would ban the import of Russian gas, saying it would double electricity prices and more than triple gas prices. These plans, potentially taking effect around 2027–2028, would, in his view, harm both Hungary and Slovakia.
Addressing the upcoming Pride march in Budapest, Orbán said Hungary must not be treated like a colony, referring to criticism from EU leaders. He emphasized that while laws must be respected, police must not resort to violence but should instead ensure legal compliance through peaceful means.
Commenting on the political deadlock in Budapest, Orbán described the city as plagued by ‘chaos, bankruptcy, traffic jams, and Pride’, blaming poor governance for its decline. He said the capital deserves leadership that prevents its deterioration.

Finally, Orbán praised astronaut Tibor Kapu’s space mission, calling it a source of national pride. He emphasized that Hungary, despite its size, plays a meaningful role in space exploration through its highly skilled companies, and that the space industry holds growing potential for the country.
‘We tip our hats and thank Tibor Kapu for bringing honour to Hungary,’ Orbán said.
