Recently, Republicans were devastated over losing a second straight election for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Democrats surely thought this meant that they would be able to flip district lines and grab some extra seats in the House.
Shockingly, the state’s high court just declined their request, giving the GOP hope that it can hold the House in the 2026 midterm election.
Big win for GOP
Republicans were stunned during the previous WI Supreme Court election when a liberal judge won the open seat, handing the left control of the court for the first time in more than a decade.
Districts boundaries were on the line, and the concern was that with liberals calling the shots, they would gerrymander the maps and take some seats back from the GOP.
In April, the GOP had a shot to take the advantage back, but once again, liberals ruled the day.
County Judge Susan Crawford easily won the seat even though Elon Musk and Donald Trump endorsed Brad Schimel, the conservative in the race.
Toss the maps
It took about a minute after that race was over for Dems to file suit to have the district lines trashed and a new map for Congress.
Wisconsin has eight seats in the U.S. House, six of which are currently Republican-held, with two of those districts being viewed as a toss-ups, but Dems wanted more.
Dems figured that a previous lawsuit used to redraw state-level district lines would serve as the precedent to have federal lines redrawn as well.
Wisconsin Democratic Rep. Mark Pocan stated, “The residents of Wisconsin deserve fair maps. Hopefully this will provide that.”
Not happening
Shockingly, the court rejected Dems’ pleas to redraw the maps, and did so without comments, so the liberals now have no idea who to be mad at here.
Pocan was furious with the ruling, stating, “It’s good that Wisconsin has fair maps at the state level, but we deserve them at the federal level as well. Unfortunately, gerrymandered maps for members of Congress will remain in Wisconsin.”
National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) spokesman Zach Bannon took a victory lap, stating, “The bipartisan rejection of the radical Democrats’ desperate and politically motivated attempt to redraw the map in their favor offers a strong preview of how Wisconsin voters will reject the Democrats’ out of touch and radical agenda next year at the ballot box.”
I have to say, I am completely shocked at this ruling, and this was a big reason why I thought the GOP would likely lose the House in 2026. I am still not confident in our ability to hold the House, but at least now there is some real hope.
