Veteran broadcaster Steve Gruber will host a hard-hitting television special examining the vulnerabilities of America’s food and agricultural systems to agroterrorism, streaming on Just The News and Off The Press at 6 p.m. ET.
The special comes on the heels of a recent incident that has heightened concerns about agroterrorism, where two Chinese researchers were charged with smuggling a dangerous biological pathogen, Fusarium graminearum, into the United States for study at a University of Michigan lab.
The fungus, classified as a potential agroterrorism weapon, can devastate crops like wheat, barley, and rice, and its toxins pose health risks to humans and livestock. The researchers, Yunqing Jian and Zunyong Liu, allegedly attempted to smuggle the pathogen through Detroit Metropolitan Airport in July 2024, with Jian, a University of Michigan postdoctoral fellow, accused of coordinating the effort.
The program will feature insights from a wide array of experts who will unpack the complexities of agroterrorism. Viewers can expect a sobering look at vulnerabilities in America’s agricultural heartland, where concentrated farming operations and monoculture crops are prime targets.
