Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has officially stopped U.S. funding to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, citing what he calls a failure by the organization to prioritize vaccine safety. The announcement marks a major shift in global health policy as Kennedy cuts Gavi funding, halting what has been over two decades of American support.
“Gavi needs to start taking vaccine safety seriously,” Kennedy said in a video statement presented at a recent Gavi summit, according to Politico. “Consider the best science available, even when the science contradicts established paradigms. Until that happens, the United States won’t contribute more to Gavi.”
Kennedy cuts Gavi funding over what he described as the alliance’s refusal to acknowledge scientific evidence that raised safety concerns about some of its vaccine programs. “When the science was inconvenient, Gavi ignored the science,” Kennedy said, pointing to the $8 billion the U.S. has contributed since 2001.
In response, Gavi emphasized that its decisions are based on data reviewed by independent experts from the World Health Organization. “Gavi fully concurs with the Secretary for Health and Human Services on the need to consider all available science,” the organization stated, while defending its record as evidence-based.
Gavi, previously known as the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, is a public-private partnership that delivers vaccines to low-income countries. The U.S. was Gavi’s largest donor through 2024, contributing approximately $5 billion—double the amount donated by the next-largest funder, the United Kingdom.
Kennedy cuts Gavi funding amid broader efforts by the Trump administration to pull back from international institutions. Funding has also been cut to the WHO, various UN agencies, and USAID. Kennedy, a longtime vaccine critic and founder of Children’s Health Defense, has continued raising safety concerns even after assuming a federal leadership role.
Despite widespread scientific consensus affirming the safety of routine vaccines, Kennedy’s position signals a new era of scrutiny and conditional funding for global health initiatives that receive U.S. taxpayer dollars.
