A former Missouri prison nurse has pleaded guilty to murdering her husband in a twisted plot involving antifreeze, arson, and a secret relationship with a convicted killer behind bars.
Amy L. Murray, 47, entered an Alford plea this week to second-degree murder in the 2018 death of her husband, 37-year-old Joshua Murray. His body was found in the charred remains of their Iberia home, but investigators quickly determined the blaze had been intentionally set—and that Joshua had already been dead before the flames started. The cause? Antifreeze poisoning.
Court records revealed Amy was having an affair with Eugene Claypool, an inmate serving a life sentence for murder at Jefferson City Correctional Center, where she worked as a nurse. Chillingly, investigators uncovered recorded prison phone calls between Amy and Claypool in which she talked about wanting to divorce her husband—and even discussed their future together.
On December 11, 2018, Amy told police she took her 11-year-old son and their two dogs out for a McDonald’s run. When they returned, the house was engulfed in flames. But authorities later learned Joshua was already dead, found lifeless on the bed inside the master bedroom.
In a call to Claypool after the fire, Amy reportedly told him her husband was “out of the picture” and they could now marry. She even offered to help hire a lawyer for Claypool in hopes of reducing his sentence.
Amy Murray was originally hit with multiple charges, including first-degree murder, arson, armed criminal action, and evidence tampering. She was also charged with first-degree sexual abuse and three counts of offender abuse for her relationship with Claypool.
By entering an Alford plea, Murray did not admit guilt but acknowledged prosecutors had enough evidence to convict her. She was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
The twisted case has stunned the local community and reignited debate over relationships between prison staff and inmates—especially when it turns deadly.
