Slashing federal spending has been a major focus of Donald Trump during his current term in office, and it appears he has upset the liberal horde.
New York Attorney General Letitia James has gone off the deep end, suing the administration over cuts the administration has introduced.
Oddly enough, she makes her case by citing federal regulations.
It’s just one line
James is contending that Trump is using a single clause in regulations of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to cut funding.
The OMB is now run by Russ Vought, who authored the controversial Project 2025, which Democrats claim is the blueprint of the Trump administration.
James filed suit, then posted to X, “The Trump administration has used a single sentence buried in federal regulations to cut billions of dollars in critical funding – slashing everything from education to health care.”
The clause to which she refers stated that the federal government can eliminate funding if it “no longer effectuates the program goals or agency priorities.”
James says the cuts will impact her programs that “combat violent crime, educate students with special needs, protect clean drinking water, repair crumbling infrastructure, and more.”
So, I guess this all comes down to a matter of perception between the administration and the state of New York.
In addition to New York, attorneys general from Massachusetts, New Jersey, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia are included.
If you look at that list of states, I am sure you can guess what they all have in common.
The suit alleges, “With the stroke of a pen, federal agencies have deprived States of critical funding they rely on to combat violent crime and protect public safety, equip law enforcement, educate students, safeguard public health, protect clean drinking water, conduct life-saving medical and scientific research, address food insecurity experienced by students in school, ensure access to unemployment benefits for workers who lose their jobs, and much more.”
It continues, “Federal agencies have done all of this without any advance notice, without any explanation to the State recipients, and in direct contravention of the will of Congress.”
As I have stated before, Trump cannot hold back funding that has already been approved unless it comes from Congress via a rescissions package. However, he can cut funding in future bills.
Trump will likely lose this suit unless Republicans put together a spending cut package and get it passed.
