MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Authorities are intensifying their search for Jerel Martin, a 35-year-old convict who made a daring escape from the Hennepin County Courthouse over 24 hours ago. Martin, who was at the courthouse for sentencing on a felony weapons possession charge, managed to evade security after an unexpected altercation.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when Judge Michael Burns sentenced Martin to five years in prison for illegal possession of ammunition, a charge he was found guilty of in March. Despite being out on bail and not in custody before the sentencing, Martin seized a moment of chaos to flee.
According to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the commotion began when a woman attempted to pass Martin a phone during the hearing. This led to a scuffle with deputies, which Martin used to his advantage, shedding his shirt and shoes as he dashed down the courthouse stairs.
Escaping from a courtroom without bars or locks is rare, but not impossible, says Edo Bayashi, a national police practices expert. Martin’s escape highlights vulnerabilities in courtroom security, particularly when individuals are not restrained.
After slipping away from deputies, Martin vanished from the building, leaving law enforcement to scour the area. Despite extensive efforts, Martin remains at large, and an active warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Court records reveal Martin’s extensive criminal history, including multiple felonies and misdemeanors dating back to 2008. His recent escape adds another chapter to a long list of offenses.
Law enforcement agencies continue to follow investigative protocols to locate Martin. Officials urge the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings or information that could aid in his capture.
Attempts to reach Martin’s public defender have been unsuccessful, leaving many questions unanswered as the search for Martin presses on.
