Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was transported to a hospital Wednesday after experiencing a medical episode at the Senate gym in Washington D.C.
The New York Democrat received treatment for dehydration during what officials described as a precautionary hospital visit.
Schumer’s office confirmed the incident occurred while the nation’s capital was under a heat advisory, with dangerous temperatures affecting the region.
The Senate leader became lightheaded while at the Capitol fitness facility and required immediate medical attention, according to his spokesperson.
Hospital staff treated Schumer for dehydration before releasing him to return to his duties at the Capitol building.
The medical episode prompted concern among Senate colleagues as lawmakers continue their work despite challenging weather conditions in the Washington area.
Schumer’s office emphasized the hospitalization was conducted “out of an abundance of caution” following the gym incident.
The Senate Minority Leader has since resumed his regular schedule and returned to work at the Capitol complex.
The Daily Caller reported that Schumer issued a public health reminder through his spokesperson about heat safety following his release from medical care.
The senator “wants to remind everyone to drink some water and stay out of the heat,” according to the official statement from his office.
Heat advisories have been issued across the Washington D.C. metropolitan area as temperatures reach potentially dangerous levels.
Medical professionals typically recommend increased hydration and limiting outdoor activities during heat advisory periods.
Speaking of heated exchanges, Schumer made headlines back in April after Elon Musk escalated the pair’s feud when the billionaire accused the New York Democrat of benefiting from government fraud.
The clash began when Schumer wrote a post on X highlighting the ways he felt that President Donald Trump “has unleashed chaos on America.”
Musk responded on the platform early with a pointed accusation. “Chuck, I’m starting to think you’re getting a piece of the action with the government fraud. But no, that couldn’t possibly be the reason, could it?” he wrote.
Resist the Mainstream reported last last month that Schume is currently facing another major re-election setback as a new poll shows him trailing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) among Jewish Democrats.
The Honan Strategy Group (HSG), polling for the Jewish Voters Action Network (JVAC), found AOC leading Schumer 45 percent to 33 percent in a hypothetical Senate primary.
17 percent of Jewish Democrat respondents remained undecided, according to the poll.
Schumer, 74, has traditionally counted Jewish voters as a cornerstone of his political base.
“This is a massive wake-up call for Schumer,” JVAC co-founder Maury Litwack said in a statement.
These findings came nearly one month after Schumer was asked how he felt about another poll showing him with one of the worst approval ratings among Democrats.
CNN Capitol Correspondent Raju asked Schumer, “There’s a poll out today that has your approval rating lower than any other congressional leader at 17 percent. Are you concerned that you may be a liability for your party?”
Schumer replied, “Polls come and go. Our party is united. We’re on our front foot, we’re stepping forward, going after Trump and having real success.”
