A West Virginia mother is behind bars after allegedly pinning down her 5-year-old daughter and violently yanking out two of her teeth in what witnesses described as a disturbing outburst involving religious delusions.
Rebecca Lee Bailey, 40, was arrested last week in the small town of Lester after deputies responded to a call reporting suspected child abuse. According to the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office, the call came from inside the home, where someone had witnessed the alleged attack in progress.
When deputies arrived, they found a shaken family member holding the injured child and were quickly told that Bailey had just assaulted her daughter.
Investigators say Bailey forcibly pinned down the girl and pulled out two of her lower front teeth. It remains unclear whether she used a tool or ripped them out with her hands. Officials have not released further details on how the injuries occurred.
A witness told police that Bailey had been yelling that her daughter “had a demon in her” during the attack — and was reportedly holding a cross as she carried it out. The scene was so disturbing that another family member, woken up by the commotion, stepped in and managed to stop the attack before calling law enforcement.
Deputies arrested Bailey on the spot and charged her with felony child abuse resulting in bodily injury by a parent or guardian. She was taken to the Southern Regional Jail, where she remains in custody on a $50,000 bond.
Child Protective Services and EMS were also dispatched to the home to evaluate the situation and provide medical care. The young girl was later released into the custody of a responsible family member.
Authorities did not offer a clear motive, but the sheriff’s office praised the swift action of the family member who intervened.
“This was a deeply disturbing case, and we’re thankful someone inside the home had the courage to act quickly,” said the sheriff’s office. “Deputies Lilly and Eller did an outstanding job in responding and ensuring the child’s safety.”
Bailey is scheduled to appear in court on June 30 for a preliminary hearing. The investigation remains ongoing.
