A heated argument over the price of a beer turned violent at a Fort Lauderdale gas station, landing a Florida clerk behind bars, according to police.
Abdulla Monther, 46, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery after allegedly shooting a customer during a late-night dispute at the Valero station where he worked, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
The incident unfolded just before midnight on June 19. Deputies responding to reports of a shooting were met by Monther himself, who reportedly admitted to getting into a verbal altercation with a customer that “led to the shooting,” according to an affidavit.
Witnesses told police that the dispute started when the customer argued with Monther over the cost of a beer. The customer allegedly tossed a small object—possibly a piece of paper—toward the counter. Monther responded by grabbing a gun from under the register and firing it, hitting the customer in the calf.
Surveillance footage backed up the witnesses’ version of events. The video showed Monther retrieving a black firearm, racking the slide, and firing at the customer after the verbal spat.
But what happened next was just as disturbing. Authorities say Monther hurled a racial slur at the injured customer and left the counter to follow him, still brandishing the weapon.
During questioning, Monther told investigators the shooting stemmed from a dispute over fifty cents. He claimed the customer grabbed some candy and threatened to kill him, saying, “You are going to die here tonight.” Monther described the customer as loud and aggressive, which he said made him feel threatened. He insisted he aimed at the floor in an attempt not to hit the man directly.
Deputies recovered the weapon, a 9mm Sig Sauer P226, along with a bullet and a magazine near the scene.
Monther was arrested and booked into the Broward County Jail. He posted $10,000 bond and was released on Monday, according to court records.
