The Washington Monument is closed on Tuesday over an extreme heat warning in the nation’s capital, according to the National Park Service.
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning, with the heat wave expected to continue through Wednesday, local CBS News affiliate WUSA-TV reported.
The monument has an air conditioning system inside, after it was last renovated six years ago, but it may not be able to keep up with the extreme heat.
Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a heat alert for the city through Wednesday, opening cooling centers and spray parks for people out in the sweltering heat.
Tuesday is set to be the hottest day of the week, with highs expected to reach nearly 100 degrees but feeling like 110.
