U.S. Marshals rescue 60 kids from trafficking

TAMPA, FL – In an unprecedented effort to combat child trafficking, U.S. Marshals and local law enforcement agencies have rescued 60 children and teens from perilous situations in the Tampa Bay area. The two-week operation, hailed as the largest child recovery mission in U.S. history, concluded with the safeguarding of minors aged 9 to 17 and the arrest of eight individuals.

The investigation led officers to various locations, from alleyways to motels, as they followed every lead. Since 2015, the U.S. Marshals have expanded their expertise beyond capturing fugitives to recovering critically endangered children. During the operation, they collaborated with detectives from Tampa, Hillsborough County, Pinellas County, St. Petersburg, and Pasco County.

One case involved a 15-year-old girl missing since April. The team, led by U.S. Deputy Marshal Paul Taurasi, received tips suggesting she was in West Tampa. Concerns grew as she was found with adults providing her shelter and resources, raising fears of exploitation.

The search revealed the challenges faced by children in foster care, many of whom run from difficult situations only to encounter greater dangers. Dr. Katherine Gomez, director of human trafficking intervention for Florida’s Department of Juvenile Justice, emphasized the pervasiveness of trafficking across the state.

Operation Dragon, as it was named, began with a list of 60 to 80 missing children. Eight days in, more than 40 had been located. The recovery process involves further investigations into potential abuse and finding safe placements for the children.

The urgency of these searches is underscored by tragic cases, such as the disappearance of 16-year-old Miranda Corset, who was later found dead. Similar fates befell others like 14-year-old Alexia Alexander, highlighting the critical need for timely intervention.

A breakthrough came when the team received a lead on one of the missing teens. Upon arriving at the location, they found her hiding, leading to further investigation into those harboring her.

The operation’s success lies not only in the immediate rescue but in offering hope and support to these young individuals. Detective Tony Ortiz approaches these interactions with empathy, focusing on their well-being rather than solely on law enforcement.
