Pro-lifers have been so understandably preoccupied with the new challenges and difficulties of a post-Roe America that they have insufficiently celebrated the fact that we are now living in that America. For nearly 50 years, the Supreme Court had pretended that the Constitution protects abortion from democratic regulation, notwithstanding the lack of support for that proposition in its text, logic, structure, or original understanding. The justices who renounced that lie in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Center exposed themselves to scurrilous criticisms and even threats to their safety. They merit praise for striking a blow for constitutional fidelity and for human rights, rightly considered. — National Review.
We had just completed the opening Prayer Breakfast of the 2022 National Right to Life Conference where Catherine Davis had wowed the gathering and were half-way through pro-life bioethicist Wesley J. Smith’s riveting talk on “How the technocracy threatens the Sanctity of Life” when a booming voice in back rang out “Roe is overturned.”
There was stunned silence….for all of a half-second. The audience knew the Supreme Court had decided Dobbs v. Women’s Health Organization in favor of the babies.
Some people wept, others looked toward heaven, and everyone clapped. My wife, Lisa, and I looked at each other and smiled.

Less than an hour later, I was taking notes on “Preparing for the 2022 elections.”
Then-President Joe Biden, pro-abortion down to his last corpuscle, called the 5-1-3 decision a “sad day for the Court and for our country.” But for those right to lifers in attendance at the Conference, it was (to quote NRLC’s General Counsel James Bopp, Jr.) a “glorious day.”
To state the obvious—the decision roused the forces of death—does not in the slightest way diminish that our nearly 50 years of patient, deliberate, and persistent effort had paid off richly for the babies. As I heard repeatedly that morning from the crowd, “Oh Happy Day.”
The editors of National Review offered important counsel in two other areas:
In every state, pro-lifers should be pushing for the most life-protective regime of law that can be politically sustained. And that must include dispelling the dangerous legal and medical misinformation that supporters of abortion have been promoting. No pro-life laws anywhere in our country require doctors to wait for pregnant women undergoing medical crises to face imminent death before they can provide treatment. Pro-life officials, and juries, need to make this crystal clear to hospitals. Likewise, no pro-life laws anywhere are responsible for women dying from taking the abortion pill without ongoing medical supervision — the fruits of pro-abortion policymakers at the Food and Drug Administration.
And
Both states and the federal government, as appropriate, should also join churches and private charities in supporting mothers, children, and their families in meeting economic needs. That help can and should take multiple forms, from making catastrophic health insurance available on the market to giving parents tax relief.
NRLC President Carol Tobias described it in this beautiful way: “Dobbs did not mark the end of our journey but rather a new and hope-filled beginning. That belief is grounded in the conviction that Dobbs made possible a renewed appreciation that we are in this together: mother, father, and baby.”
And that is the gospel truth. Pro-lifers have as our goal the reconnection that should exist for all families: the love and tenderness that mothers and fathers willingly exhibit toward the most defenseless of all God’s creatures—the unborn child.
