During a conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump made a remark about D-Day that caused quite a stir and prompted Merz to respond politely but firmly. Knewz.com has learned that Trump’s comment came during a conversation about ending Russia‘s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, and what the United States can do to help.

Chancellor Merz invoked D-Day — a turning point in World War II when the Allied forces stormed the beaches in Normandy, France, which ultimately led to the defeat of Nazi Germany — in the conversation as an example of the U.S. ending a war in Europe. While Germany was defeated in the Second World War, D-Day also marked the beginning of the fall of the Nazi regime. However, President Trump referred to the historic day as “not a pleasant” one for Germany.

“We all are looking for measures and for instruments to bring this terrible war [between Russia and Ukraine] to an end,” Chancellor Merz said during the Oval Office meeting. He then referenced D-Day, which he described as a day “when the Americans once ended a war in Europe.” Added Merz, “I think this is in your hands [again].”
President Trump interrupted him and remarked, “That was not a pleasant day for you,” referring to the German forces’ defeat at the hands of Allied soldiers. “This was not a great day,” Trump insisted.
At this point, the German Chancellor politely pushed back and said, “In the long run, Mr. President, this was the liberation of my country from Nazi dictatorship.”

“That’s true, that’s true,” President Trump agreed.
The German Chancellor continued, saying, “And we know what we owe you… This is the reason why I’m saying that America is again in a very strong position to do something on this war and ending this war. So let’s talk about what we can do jointly.”
In her analysis of Chancellor Merz’s White House debut, Maria Fiedler, deputy head of Der Spiegel’s Berlin bureau, wrote, “[Merz] flattered Trump, highlighting his importance to ending the war in Ukraine. He showed himself grateful for the U.S.’s historical achievement ridding Germany of the Nazi dictatorship. And he took note of advice from other heads of state who previously visited Trump: don’t talk too much, Trump has a short attention span.”

During the meeting, President Trump likened Russia and Ukraine to “two young children fighting like crazy in a park” and even suggested that it was better to let them “fight for a while” instead of pursuing peace immediately, according to reports.
President Trump also said that he had urged Russian President Vladimir Putin not to retaliate against Ukraine’s “unprecedented” drone strikes. “I said, ‘Don’t do it,’” the U.S. President said in a statement to reporters.
However, it seems the president’s suggestion went unheeded, as Russia has continued to batter Ukraine with increasingly heavier airstrikes.
