President Donald Trump now seems to be suggesting that he is open to a regime change taking place in Iran.
Trump said as much in a Truth Social message that he released on Sunday, after he and his administration carried on strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
The president’s message seemed to conflict with the messaging of some of his top officials, who appeared on news outlets to defend the administration’s strikes on Iran.
The big question is whether Trump thinks that the U.S. should be the one to effectuate that regime change.
Background
In the lead-up to the strikes on Iran and after the strikes, the Trump administration — and many Republicans — united behind the idea that the strikes were only meant to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.
Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth all echoed this message when they appeared on various television networks on Sunday.
Vance, for example, told ABC News, “We don’t want to achieve regime change. We want to achieve the end of the Iranian nuclear program. That’s what the president set us out to do.”
It was a similar story from Hegseth and Rubio, among others. Then, later on in the day, Trump released this message:
It’s not politically correct to use the term, “Regime Change,” but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change??? MIGA!!!

That was fast
It is worth pointing out that, in this message, Trump does not come out and say that his administration is going to effectuate a regime change in Iran if it does not meet Trump’s demands.
Still, in a very short period of time, the Trump administration went from denouncing the idea of a regime change to being open to it – as well as being open to the possibility of “Making Iran Great Again.”
This has rubbed some of the president’s “Make America Great Again” supporters the wrong way. They argue that it is one thing to take out Iran’s nuclear capabilities but an entirely different thing to be trying to topple their regime. Their concern seems to be that this could turn into another Iraq-type situation, which would be bad for several reasons, including that America has enough problems of its own to take care of here on home soil.
Take a look, for example, at this message from U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).
At the time of this writing, Trump has not released a follow-up message on the regime change issue.
