New reports would seem to suggest that an internal conflict is taking place within the Democratic Party.
The conflict, according to Breitbart News, is over leadership and, ultimately, over the party’s future.
One of the individuals who is trying to lead the Democrats is Ken Martin, the new leader of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
However, it would appear that not everyone is thrilled about his leadership. In fact, some are already calling for his removal.
“Growing scrutiny amid party turmoil”
This is how The Hill describes the challenges that Martin is facing. The outlet, for its source, cites Brian Lemek, a Democratic Party strategist and founder and executive director of Defend the Vote.
Lemek told the outlet:
Ken Martin is stepping into a really difficult situation right now, and I would say he was elected and they handed him a mop and a bucket.
The mop and bucket, of course, would be to clean up the mess that the Democratic Party currently is.
Look, for example, at what The Hill goes on to write:
A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Thursday found 62 percent of Democrats said “party leaders should be replaced.” Forty-nine percent of Democratic respondents said they were “unsatisfied with current leadership,” while 41 percent said they disagreed with the sentiment that they were unsatisfied with leadership. And most of the coverage surrounding the committee has been dominated by intraparty fighting that has spilled out into the open, something Democratic lawmakers are cognizant of.
You would be forgiven for not knowing who exactly is leading the Democratic Party these days.
It’s “leaderless”
A former campaign manager for Hillary Clinton recently made headlines when she went on a popular podcast and argued that the Democratic Party is “leaderless” and struggling.
Patti Solis Doyle said:
The other problem that they have is that there’s no real leader. If your party holds the White House, the leader of the party is the president. If your party doesn’t hold the White House, the leader of the party is the last president of that party. So right now, for us, that’s Joe Biden. But he has completely — he’s off the radar completely … So right now, we’re leaderless, we’re messageless, we’re agendaless.
In a technical sense, of course, Solis Doyle is wrong. You have House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and others, such as DNC leader Martin.
In a practical sense, however, Solis Doyle is right — the Democratic Party does not currently appear to have an effective leader, someone who can unite the party behind a common goal.
The big question going into the midterms and then into 2028 is who is going to emerge, if anyone, to lead the party. Will it be familiar faces, such as California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and others, or will it be someone entirely new? We’ll see.
