NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL – A honeymoon turned tragic when a 29-year-old man from Colorado was struck by lightning while enjoying the shores of New Smyrna Beach. Jake Rosenkranz was standing in ankle-deep water near 27th Avenue when the unexpected strike occurred, according to Volusia Beach Safety officials.
Despite the storm being miles away, Rosenkranz was hit, highlighting the unpredictable nature of lightning strikes. Emergency services rushed to the scene, as revealed by 911 calls capturing the frantic attempts to save him. “We’re just pumping his chest right now,” one caller said, seeking guidance on CPR.
Tammy Malphurs from Volusia Beach Safety described the incident as exceptionally rare, noting that such occurrences on the county’s beaches are infrequent. “It’s real, it’s rare, but it is a true tragedy,” she remarked.
First responders arrived swiftly, performing CPR before transporting Rosenkranz to the hospital. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries the following morning. The incident serves as a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictability.
Malphurs emphasized the importance of heeding lifeguards’ warnings and staying informed about weather conditions. “Our agency is monitoring storm systems, and beachgoers should take their cues from lifeguards,” she advised.
