The Romanian Hungarian minority party, the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), will be part of the newly formed four-party government coalition, party leader Hunor Kelemen announced on Sunday.
According to a video message posted on social media, the RMDSZ will hold ministerial positions in the government to be formed by Prime Minister-designate Ilie Bolojan, president of the National Liberal Party (PNL), with the participation of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Save Romania Union (USR), which had previously been in opposition. The coalition also includes the parliamentary faction representing non-Hungarian national minorities, which will provide parliamentary support to the four-party government.
Hunor Kelemen emphasized that the RMDSZ had gone through a very difficult period, and the challenges ahead would be no less demanding, as ‘last year’s poor governance’ had resulted in a massive public debt and budget deficit due to overspending—problems that must be addressed in a way that places the burden on the ‘bloated’ state institutions rather than on citizens.
‘We need a state diet, and we must protect our community. We must ensure that everything we have achieved in recent years cannot be reversed. In last year’s parliamentary elections, we asked for a mandate to govern, provided that the necessary conditions could be created. This was the case in the first half of the year, and we will continue in the same vein in the coming period,’ Kelemen stated.
The RMDSZ will have three representatives in the cabinet: Attila Cseke will continue to lead the Ministry of Development; András Demeter will be nominated as Minister of Culture; and the alliance will also hold the position of deputy prime minister without portfolio, to be filled by Barna Tánczos.
Kelemen also announced that on Monday, the coalition parties will sign the agreement on joint governance, submit the government programme and the list of ministers to parliament, and in the afternoon, a vote of confidence will be held so that the new Romanian government may begin its work in the evening.
