Following a deadly active shooter incident Sunday morning at Crosspoint Community Church in Wayne, Mich., Polk County, Fla. Sheriff Grady Judd is urging all houses of worship to enhance their security measures immediately.
“The active shooter event at Crosspoint Community Church reminds us all that churches must have a safety plan ready to respond to an active shooter,” Judd said, as reported by The Tampa Free Press.
Police in Wayne responded swiftly after reports of an active shooter in the church parking lot. A security guard shot and killed the 31-year-old attacker, officials said. “Shooter is down in the parking lot,” said an official on the dispatch radio. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said federal support is assisting local law enforcement.
Judd challenged church leaders and congregants alike: “Does your house of worship have a plan to protect and immediately stop an active shooter?” If not, he said church leadership must create and implement such plans without delay. He said no place is immune from threats and urged everyone to remain vigilant.
