ST. LOUIS, MO – A dramatic police chase ended with a suspected carjacker in custody after a series of events that unfolded near the bustling Soulard Market late this afternoon. The pursuit, which began just before 4 p.m., saw the suspect, driving a Dodge Challenger, attempting to evade capture.
The chase commenced when St. Louis metro police identified the distinctive vehicle at Kia and Ray Avenue. The car was linked to a carjacking incident from earlier this month, and officers were determined to apprehend the suspect, described as dangerous and desperate to escape.
During the pursuit, a police cruiser collided with a Toyota at the intersection of South 7th Street and Lafayette. The crash resulted in the cruiser smashing into a business sign, while the Toyota spun to a stop in the intersection. Inside the Toyota were a woman and three children, while two officers occupied the cruiser. All were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police spokesperson Mitch McCoy expressed relief, noting the extent of the vehicular damage but emphasizing that injuries were not severe. Despite the collision, the Challenger continued its flight, sparking a second chase that ended at Forest Park Parkway and Sarah Avenue.
The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was swiftly apprehended by a police lieutenant. Authorities recovered a firearm and a significant quantity of suspected fentanyl from the suspect.
This incident marks the 18th crash involving police vehicles in the past two years, underscoring the risks officers face during high-speed pursuits. Previous incidents occurred close to police headquarters, including notable collisions in December 2023 and January 2024.
Although shaken, the officers involved in today’s pursuit are expected to recover fully. The circuit attorney’s office is now evaluating charges against the suspect, who is accused of injuring at least six people during the chaotic series of events.
