Attorney General Pam Bondi has announced a firm federal crackdown on sanctuary cities, declaring the practice effectively over by the end of 2025.
In a recent interview on Fox News’ “Mornings with Maria” with host Maria Bartiromo, Bondi emphasized the administration’s determination to eliminate sanctuary policies swiftly and without delay.
“No more sanctuary cities. I wouldn’t even say four years, I’d say give it to the end of the year. Sanctuary cities are over! There are no more sanctuary cities as far as the federal government’s concerned,” Bondi stated.
She warned that harboring illegal immigrants and tipping them off ahead of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids will no longer be tolerated.
“What a sanctuary city means is they are harboring criminals, they are harboring illegal aliens, and if you’re tipping someone off when there’s going to be an ICE raid, DHS raid, we will find you and we will prosecute you,” Bondi added.
She highlighted the risk such actions pose to law enforcement officers, saying, “That jeopardizes the lives of our great men and women in law enforcement. Not gonna happen anymore. It’s a new day and we’re coming after you.”
The announcement comes amid a surge of unrest following ICE enforcement actions in Los Angeles and other cities.
Recent raids sparked violent protests and riots, drawing national attention to the tensions between federal immigration enforcement and sanctuary jurisdictions.
Law enforcement officials blame sanctuary policies for emboldening resistance and complicating immigration operations.
This move marks a dramatic shift in federal policy, signaling an end to tolerance for local governments that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration efforts.
Sanctuary cities typically restrict local law enforcement from honoring ICE detainer requests or sharing information about individuals’ immigration status.
Supporters of sanctuary policies argue that these measures build trust between immigrant communities and local police, encouraging cooperation without fear of deportation.
However, critics contend that sanctuary cities shield illegal immigrants from accountability, including those with criminal histories, thus undermining public safety and the rule of law.
Bondi’s comments come amid ongoing efforts by the Department of Justice (DOJ) to pursue legal action against jurisdictions that maintain sanctuary policies.
Major cities such as New York, Chicago and San Francisco have faced lawsuits accusing them of obstructing federal immigration enforcement.
Under Bondi’s leadership, the DOJ has also withheld federal funding from some sanctuary jurisdictions, signaling a willingness to use financial pressure to compel compliance.
Officials have warned that failure to cooperate could result in increased legal consequences and the continued loss of federal resources.
The attorney general’s public declaration sets a firm deadline: sanctuary city policies must end before the close of 2025.
Local governments that continue to defy federal directives face intensified scrutiny and potential prosecution.
This enforcement push aligns with broader Republican priorities on immigration and border security.
Conservatives have long criticized sanctuary cities for creating safe havens that undermine national sovereignty and threaten community safety.
As the 2026 midterm elections approach, sanctuary city policies and immigration enforcement remain hot-button issues.
Bondi’s crackdown is expected to be a central topic in political debates, highlighting tensions between federal authority and local autonomy.
How cities respond to the DOJ’s aggressive approach will shape the future of immigration enforcement in the United States.
With firm federal action now underway, sanctuary policies that once flourished in many urban areas could face rapid dismantling.
