The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting Sunday to address the recent US strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, according to an announcement by Guyana, which holds the Council’s rotating presidency for June.
The session was scheduled for 3 p.m. (1900 GMT) and marks the third time the Council has met in emergency session since the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Iran.
The strikes have heightened regional tensions and raised international concerns over the potential escalation of the conflict. Sunday’s meeting is expected to feature strong statements from global powers and calls for restraint amid growing fears of a broader confrontation in the Middle East.
President Donald J. Trump announced late Saturday that U.S. forces had conducted a “very successful attack” on three nuclear sites in Iran, specifically naming Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan as the targets.
