Though millions of Americans were cheering the news of Saturday’s successful strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities, one of President Donald Trump’s most frequent critics took aim at the administration, declaring the mission unlawful.
Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie did not wait long to make his disapproval clear, taking to X to assert that the bombing strikes were “unconstitutional,” as The Hill reports.
Trump celebrates, Massie lets loose
After the attack on the Iranian sites was complete, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to spread the good news.
“A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home. Congratulations to our great American Warriors. There is not another military in the World that could have done this. NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE!” he wrote.
Massie, for his part, had already announced his intention to introduce a war powers resolution to stop Trump from escalating American involvement in the Middle East conflict.
The congressman wrote, “This is not our war. But if it were, Congress must decide such matters according to our constitution.”
Massie was not alone in his thinking, with Republican Rep. Warren Davidson of Ohio also taking to social media to state, “While President Trump’s decision may prove just, it’s hard to conceive a rationale that’s Constitutional.”
Trump fires back
In the wake of Massie’s salvo, Trump returned to Truth Social to let his feelings be known, asserting that the congressman “is not MAGA, even though he likes to say he is.”
Trump continued, “Actually, MAGA doesn’t want him, doesn’t know him, and doesn’t respect him. He is a negative force who almost always Votes ‘NO,’ no matter how good something may be.”
The president went on, “He’s a simple minded ‘grandstander’ who thinks it’s good politics for Iran to have the highest level Nuclear weapon, while at the same time yelling “DEATH TO AMERICA’ at every chance they get.”
In that vein, it emerged on Sunday that the Trump team has already launched a super PAC called “Kentucky MAGA” with the sole purpose of beating Massie in the May 2026 primary in that state, as Axios reports.
Heading up the effort will be seasoned Trump advisors Tony Fabrizio and Chris LaCivita, with the latter declaring that the PAC will spend “whatever it takes” to oust Massie from the seat.
Though Massie is perhaps the loudest Republican thus far to take Trump to task for the Iran strike, that is not to say that the political fallout from the decision has been insignificant.
As Newsweek reports, a push is currently afoot to bring a War Powers Resolution to a vote in the House in an attempt to preclude further unilateral action against Iran without the consent of Congress.
Most of those currently signaling support are Democrats, but conservatives such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA) have expressed frustration with the situation and may ultimately go against Trump, someone to whom she has long been unwaveringly loyal.
