The suspect accused of killing a Minnesota state legislator and her husband reportedly left a handwritten letter blaming Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) for the crimes.
According to a report from Alpha News, Vance Boelter addressed the letter to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel. Law enforcement reportedly discovered the document after Boelter was arrested.
Authorities found the note inside a Buick that Boelter purchased shortly after the fatal shootings. He allegedly used the vehicle to flee following the attacks.
Boelter has been charged in connection with the murders of Minnesota legislator and former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. He also allegedly shot Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and Hoffman’s wife, Yvette, who both survived.
Charging documents reveal that the suspect identified himself in a note as “Dr. Vance Luther Boelter.” In the note, Boelter admitted to being the shooter involved in the two incidents.
The Star Tribune described the letter as “incoherent” and “confusing.” The document spanned one and a half pages and was reportedly difficult to read.
In the letter, Boelter allegedly claimed he had been instructed to assassinate Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D) to make way for Walz to run for Senate. He also claimed to have received military training “off the books.”
Hennepin County Attorney spokesperson Daniel Borgertpoepping stated that investigators have found no factual basis for the allegations made about Governor Walz.
Boelter was reportedly appointed by Walz in 2019 to the state’s Workforce Development Board, according to Breitbart News.
A statewide manhunt followed the attacks. Authorities apprehended Boelter in Green Isle, Minnesota, roughly 60 miles from Brooklyn Park, where the Hortmans were killed.
In the wake of the shootings, Minnesota State Patrol issued a warning advising the public to avoid “No Kings” protests, which were advertised on flyers found in Boelter’s vehicle.
Boelter was reportedly dressed in a police uniform during the attacks. After the shootings, he allegedly sent an ominous message to his family stating, “Dad went to war last night.”
He also reportedly messaged his wife, warning her to leave their home. In the message, he said, “Words are not gonna explain how sorry I am for this situation… there’s gonna be some people coming to the house armed and trigger-happy and I don’t want you guys around.”
The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors and law enforcement continue reviewing evidence related to the suspect’s claims and actions.
