Vice President JD Vance declared Friday that President Donald Trump will not hesitate to deploy the National Guard again to control riots if necessary, following a recent appeals court ruling.
The ruling allowed the president to keep command over thousands of troops sent to Los Angeles in response to anti-ICE demonstrations.
Vance said that if federal laws are enforced properly and federal law enforcement is protected, sending in the National Guard would be unnecessary.
However, if violent rioters continue to destroy American cities, federal troops will be sent in to restore order.
Speaking outside a federal building in Los Angeles, Vance emphasized that Trump is prepared to take action again if needed but hopes it will not be required.
He acknowledged that the situation in Los Angeles has improved since the initial deployment but warned local officials remain concerned about the potential for renewed unrest.
Los Angeles has become a hotspot for anti-ICE riots, sparked by Trump’s aggressive immigration crackdown.
These demonstrations have involved clashes between rioters and federal authorities working to detain criminal illegal immigrants.
During his visit to Los Angeles, Vance toured a multi-agency federal joint operations center and an FBI mobile command post, the New York Post reported.
These facilities are being used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials to coordinate enforcement efforts in the city.
He was briefed by leaders from 14 federal agencies, including ICE, the Department of Defense, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Department of Homeland Security, the Los Angeles Police Department, and the California Highway Patrol.
The agencies collaborate through the operations center to manage immigration enforcement actions.
Vance also met with some of the 200 active-duty Marines currently deployed to Los Angeles. These Marines are tasked with protecting federal property and personnel.
Additional forces are expected to arrive, including 500 more Marines and 2,000 National Guard troops, supplementing the 2,000 Guardsmen already in the city.
Earlier, a federal judge in San Francisco, Charles Breyer, ruled that Trump likely overstepped constitutional bounds by deploying troops without the approval of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).
This marked the first time since 1965 a president sent a state National Guard into action without the governor’s consent.
However, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals later suggested in its ruling that Trump lawfully used his statutory authority to take federal control of the Guard. The appeals court cited the serious violence and chaos in Los Angeles as justification for the president’s decision.
President Trump called the appeals court decision a “BIG WIN” on his social media platform, Truth Social. He has repeatedly claimed that Los Angeles would have been “burning to the ground” without the presence of Marines and National Guard troops.
ICE has continued enforcement operations in Los Angeles despite ongoing protests and violence. The federal agency maintains its focus on detaining criminal illegal immigrants amid the unrest.
During his remarks, Vance criticized Senator Alex Padilla, a California Democrat, for his disruptive behavior at a recent Department of Homeland Security press conference. Vance mistakenly called the senator “Jose Padilla” but said he wished the senator had attended the event.
He said Padilla chose not to attend because “there wasn’t the theater” that he sought, implying the senator’s behavior was merely for show.
Vance’s visit underscores the Trump administration’s resolve to maintain a firm law enforcement stance in Los Angeles amid ongoing anti-immigration protests.
The deployment of federal troops, including active-duty Marines and National Guard members, represents an escalation in the government’s response to civil unrest linked to immigration enforcement.
Local officials in Los Angeles have expressed concern about the potential for violence to flare again despite recent improvements in the situation.
The appeals court ruling is seen as a significant legal victory for the Trump administration, affirming the president’s authority to deploy federal troops in states without gubernatorial approval under certain conditions.
Vance’s statements signal the administration’s readiness to respond forcefully to any future outbreaks of violence connected to anti-ICE demonstrations.
