Four new ferries for the BC Ferries Corporation are to be built by a shipyard in Communist China?
There should be no getting in the weeds of this contract.
Just stick to some basic principles —or is this word and concept now no longer applicable?
On principle BC and Canadian Public Funds should not be involved in enhancing the shipbuilding industry of Communist China.
Have we not had a recent inquiry about Communist China and its involvement in Canadian elections and politics?
Is not Communist China supporting Russia in the Russia -Ukraine war and Canada is spending billions of dollars to assist Ukraine. Does this make sense?
Is not Communist China playing economic warfare in Africa and South America undermining democratic Governments?
Federal Transport Minister has written The BC Minister expressing her outrage at such a contract award. The Minister said:
“I am dismayed that B.C. Ferries would select a Chinese state-owned shipyard to build new ferries in the current geopolitical context,” Freeland wrote.
The Freedom score for China is 9 out of 100——-by Freedom House —freedomhouse.org.
Canada is 86 out of 100.
Freedom House says:
“China is ruled by a repressive regime. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) maintains tight control over all aspects of life and governance, including the state bureaucracy, the media, online speech, religious practice, universities, businesses, and civil society. CCP General Secretary Xi Jinping has consolidated personal power to a degree not seen in China for decades. Following a multiyear crackdown on political dissent, independent nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and human rights defenders, China’s civil society has been largely decimated.”
