Russia Wants to Have Its Cake and Eat It Too
Paul Craig Roberts
The Kremlin’s spokesman said the countries in the Middle East are “now plunging into the abyss of instability and war.” The Kremlin should have thought about that before Putin green-lighted the instability and war by standing aside from Russia’s Iranian ally, just as Putin stood aside from Russia’s Syrian ally, thus leading to the destruction of Syria. Putin has as much responsibility for “the abyss of instability and war” in the Middle East as Netanyahu and the succession of US presidents who danced to Netanyahu’s tune. Now it seems Putin dances to Netanyahu’s tune, expressing his concern with Israeli’s survival, not with Iran’s.
The Kremlin has an amazing incapacity to recognize reality. Its spokesman stresses Russia and Israel’s “working channels for dialogue” and Putin’s “potential to offer mediation.” Confronted with Netanyahu and Trump’s obvious determination to have war with Iran to the point of having a fake IAEA report concocted to provide the excuse, the Kremlin offers mediation services! If the Kremlin or China had stood with Iran, there would be no war.
Putin has harmed Russia by demonstrating that Russia cuts and runs and is not a reliable ally.
