Over the course of his third presidential campaign, President Donald Trump repeatedly presented himself as a defender of American Christians and his rivals, then-President Joe Biden and then-Vice President Kamala Harris, as opponents and even persecutors of the Christian faith. A new survey is showing that American Christians largely agreed with Trump’s rhetoric, even if not with all of his policy decisions. Change Research conducted what Time Magazine called “one of the largest polls of Christian voters ever to quantify the mood of the nation’s largest voting bloc,” and found that American Christians broadly do not trust the Democratic Party.
According to the survey, 75% of Christian voters say that they have “little or no trust in the Democratic Party,” while 58% say that party elites and leaders are “hostile to Christianity,” 54% say that even Democratic voters are “hostile to Christianity,” and 62% say that they would “never consider voting for a Democrat.”
Doug Pagitt, the “progressive pastor” who commissioned the study, told Time that Democrats have crippled their electoral prowess by ignoring and denigrating American Christians and Christian values. “You can’t be the majority party if you ignore the majority faith in this country,” he said. Pointing to the success Republicans have had with Christian voters, he continued, “Republicans have made a concerted effort. Democrats have done everything they can never to name that [Christian] identity. They have a built-in bias against these identities in the Democratic Party.” Pagitt opined that Democrats “squandered” their chances with Christian voters in the 2024 election. “They just walked away,” he said.

Following the November election, Democratic political operative and “Catholics for Harris” co-founder Christopher Hale made a similar observation. “Harris’ failure to engage Catholic voters is symptomatic of a broader issue within the Democratic Party: a discomfort with engaging faith communities across the nation,” Hale wrote in a Newsweek opinion piece. He continued, “Over the years, the party has increasingly aligned itself with secular and progressive values, often sidelining religious voices in the process. This shift has alienated many religious voters, who feel their beliefs are not only unrepresented but actively dismissed. For Catholics, this alienation is particularly acute on issues like abortion.”
Trump comfortably won the Christian vote last year by relatively wide margins. Christians generally voted for Trump by a nearly 30-point margin, with Catholics backing him by a 20-point margin. Polling prior to the election consistently showed Trump’s Democratic opponents underperforming the now-president among most Christian demographics: Trump had the support of the majority of white evangelical Protestants and white Catholics, while Harris at the time had the support of the majority of black Protestants and Hispanic Catholics, along with atheists, agnostics, and Jews. A study released shortly after the election credited Christians with handing Trump his victory, noting that Catholic voters and Christians with a biblical worldview both outperformed their 2020 turnout by three points.
In comments to The Washington Stand, FRC Action Director Matt Carpenter said, “There was a time not that long ago when Democrats in Congress passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) and a Democratic president signed it into law. Those days are gone.” He continued, “Once Democrats discovered Christians benefit from religious freedom, they turned on their previous support for RFRA — and Christians took note. Nowadays, Democrats will sue Christian bakers and small business owners into oblivion because of their faith. What other conclusion is there for Christian voters to draw from this other than that Democrats despise Christians?”
Carpenter continued, “The electoral consequences of this will be substantial for Democrats, as a clear majority of Americans identify as Christian, and now there are signs young people — especially men — are returning to church.” He added, “The Democrats have set themselves up for strong headwinds with one of the largest blocs of voters in America, and one that looks set to grow in influence in the years ahead.”
In the years and months leading up to 2024, Democrats made numerous moves that significantly damaged their standing among Christian voters. Under Biden, the FBI illegally targeted American Catholics and spied on American Catholic parishes, labeling traditionalist Catholics as “racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists,” and the Biden Justice Department targeted pro-life Americans for aggressive prosecution.
As the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, Harris picked Minnesota’s far-left Governor Tim Walz (D) as her running mate, skipped a historic Catholic charity dinner, pledged to nix religious exemptions and force Christian doctors to commit abortions, and vociferously advocated for the transgender agenda, even targeting children.
“While there will never be a sinless political party, Christians might be increasingly skeptical of the Democratic Party because the Democratic Party is increasingly hostile to everything God said was true and good for humanity,” said Joseph Backholm, senior fellow for Biblical Worldview at Family Research Council, in comments to TWS. “If being a Christian means anything, it means submitting to God’s authority over us and the world he created,” he said.
Backholm explained, “While there are prudential differences between the political parties on things like tax rates and the right solution to poverty, today’s Democratic Party is largely defined by its belief that humanity is free to do and be anything we think will lead to personal happiness. This is why they believe marriage can be whatever we want it to be, men can become women, it’s abusive for parents not to obey their children, abortion is virtuous, and all sex is good sex if everyone involved consents.”
“The Left’s love of autonomy and general disdain for the creation order has made them hostile toward those who defend the creation order,” Backholm asserted. He continued, “Their worldview has led them to conclude that the church and nuclear family are not essential places of formation, but places of oppression where people are encouraged to deny their authentic selves. As a result, they have become enemies of religious freedom and parental rights in the hopes that it will make it easier for people to do whatever they want, whenever they want to.”
Backholm concluded, “Because they object to the idea that God has created rules that govern humanity, they also object to the institutions God created to fulfill his plan.”
