A routine missing persons report has turned into a horrifying homicide investigation in South Carolina after human remains were discovered stuffed inside plastic containers.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Christy Thomas Ward and Charles Edward Antwine were initially reported missing last week from their home in Brunswick County, North Carolina. The search took a shocking turn on Saturday, June 14, when a deputy patrolling a local boat landing in Florence County spotted what appeared to be the roof of a submerged car.
Divers recovered the vehicle and quickly identified it as belonging to Charles Edward Antwine. Though listed as a missing person, Antwine also had a second home near Lake City, South Carolina—where investigators made a far more disturbing discovery.
When deputies arrived at Antwine’s Lake City property, they were met with silence and a foul smell. No one answered the door. After obtaining a search warrant, law enforcement entered the home and found Antwine, 56, calmly sitting on a couch.
But the shock didn’t end there.
Inside the home, deputies uncovered human remains sealed in multiple plastic containers that had been taped shut. Authorities have not yet identified the remains or confirmed whether they belong to Christy Thomas Ward, the woman reported missing alongside Antwine.
Antwine was arrested the following day and charged with desecration of human remains. More charges may be filed as the investigation progresses.
Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken has ordered an autopsy at the Medical University of South Carolina to help determine the identity and cause of death.
Antwine is currently being held at the Florence County Detention Center pending a bond hearing. It is unclear whether he has secured legal representation or entered a plea.
The sheriff’s office says the case remains active, and anyone with information is urged to come forward.
